Racial & Ethnicity Data Collection

The Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) require all School Meal Program sponsors to collect race and ethnicity data of all applicants and participants. To meet this requirement, the School Meal Program must notify applicants and participants of the following: 

  • The purpose for collecting race and ethnicity data is to determine how effectively School 
  • Meal Programs are reaching potentially eligible students 
  • The provision of this data is voluntary 
  • The responses are kept confidential 
  • The responses have no effect on eligibility
